Just how many JAV movies are there on earth?
Many JAV enthusiasts may unintentionally ask this question when they see the dazzling array of JAV movies available on streaming sites. I find myself puzzled by this question as well, having once dreamed of collecting all JAV movies into my NAS.
Today, let's explore this interesting and valuable question from a Big Data perspective.
To begin, we need to define the question. The first thing we must clarify is what the term "JAV movie" means.
Broadly speaking, it should include all adult videos made in Japan or primarily by Japanese creators. However, given the vast number of videos that meet this broad criterion, and considering that a major interest in human life is interacting with others, we need to narrow the scope. For a more reasonable and manageable scale, we will consider JAV movies as those with an official JAV code (e.g., SONE-030). JAV codes are typically identifiable by their unique and simple format (e.g., XXX-0123), although there are exceptions for certain companies like 1PONDO or FC2. Generally, we can classify JAV movies into two types: those from companies rooted in Japan, which publish their works on major JAV platforms like DMM/Fanza, and those from companies based in other countries, such as FC2 in the USA. FC2 functions more like a platform that aggregates works from various creators and sells them to clients.
Having addressed the problem definition, let's discuss the first type. By examining the DMM site, we find that as of August 2024, there are approximately478,000 movies available.
We also observe a noticeable dip in the number of videos in 2008, likely due to the economic downturn of that period. Interestingly, both the number and quality of JAV movies have been increasing rapidly since 2020.
